The Client

The client is based in Italy (Milano province) and is a leader in valve manufacturing. The client is well-known and has a 60-year history in developing flow control solutions and producing specialized products such as subsea valves for the energy industry. Products include top-entry ball valves, slab gate valves, ball valves, swing check valves, and wedge gate valves that are often customized for their customers.

The Challenges Faced by the Client

The client wanted to convert 100,000 drawings from a two-dimensional format to a SolidWorks three-dimensional format. The client required the utmost quality in their products and the drawings needed a high level of precision and accuracy to facilitate the work of the manufacturing team. The project involved three primary challenges -

  • The quality of the PDF files was poor
  • The client had large volumes of 3D drawings to be completed in short time
  • Products based on the drawings needed to be in compliance with international standards

Our Solution

The Flatworld Solutions drafting and engineering digitization specialists developed this solution after analyzing the volume and exact requirements of the client -

  • The project team included an account manager, six drafters, and a quality analyst. Arrangements were made to engage additional personnel to handle increasing work volume
  • Prior to drawing conversions, the challenge of using low-quality PDF files was resolved via client communication and team research
  • Daily updates were provided to the client to clarify issues regarding original 2D files and obtain client inputs regarding new 3D drawings
  • This is an ongoing project with increasing volume as needed by the client. 200 SolidWorks 3D drawings were initially provided daily to the client. The team is periodically scaled up to enable 400 drawings per day
  • The quality analyst reviewed work products throughout the project to ensure high quality

The Results
