US States & Cities With Most Spam Calls

Spam calls have become an insidious burden for Americans, disrupting daily life with relentless frequency. We analyzed data from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to assess the scope of the problem and identify states most affected.

A new analysis by Flatworld Solutions shows that over the last twelve months, 97,198 complaints flooded the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). No state has been spared from this epidemic, with densely populated regions experiencing the majority of calls. California is leading the pack, registering almost 13,000 complaints, closely followed by Texas and Florida.

When examining complaints per capita, despite their relatively small populations, Alaska and the District of Columbia experience the highest levels of disturbance, averaging 59 and 54 complaints per 100,000 residents, respectively—twice the national average of 27 complaints per 100,000 residents.

Conversely, North Dakota and Hawaii report only 14 complaints per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Louisiana and South Dakota. Notably, North Dakota has the lowest number of complaints, with just 108, trailed by Wyoming, South Dakota, and Hawaii, with Rhode Island rounding out the top five states with the fewest FCC complaints.

On the city level, Clinton Illinois recorded the most complaints. As the population is only of 7,004, this number is probably due to the dedication of some inhabitants to report most of the unwanted calls they receive. Less surprisingly, most major american cities are part of the top 20 for most complaints about unwanted calls.

However, these figures merely scratch the surface of the problem. Already facing this time consuming spam calls, most people won't take the extra step to report them.Spam calls can aslo have serious consequence. Scammers utilize various angles to prey on unsuspecting individuals, exploiting their trust and vulnerabilities.

Methodology

Our study utilized the FCC Database to analyze informal consumer complaints by state. We filtered the data to include entries related to unwanted calls within the timeframe of May 2, 2023, to May 2, 2024. Subsequently, we selected all relevant complaints for further analysis.
